Trail Watcher (England Coast Path)
Being a Rights of Way volunteer is great for those who love the outdoors and want to help other people explore the joys of our amazing network.
There are 6 trails that are currently promoted by the Rights of Way team. For this role, we are looking for volunteers to support the 105km long section of the England Coast Path. This is a National Trail and is one of the most popular walks in Somerset.
The promoted trails are divided up into sections of various length and you can choose from the available sections to ensure your volunteering can fit around your other commitments. If there are other volunteers in your area or volunteering on the same trail, there may be opportunities to meet new people too.
When you sign up for this role, you will receive a map or directional guide for your section of trail and can request some gloves and secateurs to help you keep your adopted route clear. There is a self-led, online induction to complete and other optional eLearning available if you want to find out more about the council, volunteering and Rights of Way.
We are currently developing a guide for how to report back to us the status of your section of trail – it’s an exciting time to get involved and help to develop this! This role also includes an option to help us seek feedback from people using the trail, through visitor survey questionnaires.
Volunteers say
It gives me the motivation to gain further life experiences. It's very satisfying to know you are improving the Rights of Way for the generations that follow.
It gives me an enjoyable walk and I am helping others to use the same footpaths.
It gives me a sense of satisfaction knowing that I help keep access to the countryside open for all. Something that I strongly believe in.
Please note, this role requires both an employer and character reference. If this is a difficulty for you, please contact the Rights of Way Volunteer and Trails officer on 01823 358250 / ROWvolunteers@somerset.gov.uk
